November 22nd was one of the most special days in Australian history, as this was the opening ceremony for the Melbourne Olympic Games 1956. Australians all gathered to watch and cheer on their teams, and for those who couldn't make it would watch at homes, since it was the first Olympic games to be filmed on television. Holding the Olympics Games in Australia, it helped create a sense of national pride, rather than considering themselves as British outpost. Many Australian athletes starred in front of their home crowd. Betty Cuthbert, Dawn Fraser, Shirley Strickland and Murray Rose all won more than one gold medal, creating some of Australians own ionic sports heroes.
